Event Details

Celebrate the multicultural history of Fort Nisqually. In 1855, Fort Nisqually was a trading center for people throughout the region and around the world and they greeted each other in the trade language, Chinook Jargon, by saying “klahowya” or “welcome.” The fort’s Klahowya event, free for Pierce County residents and Native tribal members, is Saturday, April 26, 2025 11am-4pm at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum in Point Defiance Park.  Learn from historical interpreters and enjoy demonstrations of historic trades like woodworking and tinsmithing. Family friendly and hands-on activities to choose from include planting your own seeds to take home, assisting in the museum’s gardens, sampling food prepared in the museum’s period kitchen, and playing Victorian games.
